DAVID HAM (AKA Nips!) I recently saw an article on the RNLI SOS South West Fundraising website regarding the Challenge Torbay Lifeboat Crew are taking on to raise funds. They are going to travel from Torbay to the Scillies and back within 24 hours after being Sillly On Scilly! Carrying out various tasks. As I grew up in Torbay I was keen to support them and contributed to their funds via the web page. I also left a comment that my dad used to run the Coral Star passenger boats from Paignton and had huge respect for the RNLI. Shortly after I received a message on Facebook from the Torbay Lifeboat Station Operations Manager no less! One David Ham, known fondly by our family as 'Nips'. He had worked for my dad John Baugh on his original Coral Star as a young lad and I remember him as the hero of the hour who rescued my dolly's knitted knickers from the sea with a boathook when they blew overboard. Not a lot of people can lay claim to those sort of heroics! We were in touch with David last when dad passed away and he kindly gave each of my family a beautifully written booklet about his memories of my dad and his time working with him at Paignton Harbour. This he has now converted into a website and the link is http://www.uptonmanor.eclipse.co.uk He has also kindly included a link to this page on his website. Many thanks David. I hope it won't be long before we can meet up.
